Jeff Stelling MBE has been passionate about football and sport for his entire career. His career in journalism began modestly after he left school in his native Hartlepool, initially working as a reporter on the Hartlepool Mail.
His break into broadcasting came in the late 1970s when he joined BBC Radio Tees, where his engaging style quickly made him a standout voice. He later moved into national broadcasting, working as a reporter for LBC Radio and then joining TV AM as a sports presenter. His big break came in the early 1990s when he joined Sky Sports, just as the broadcaster was beginning to transform coverage of football and live sport in the UK.
It was at Sky that Jeff became a household name. As the anchor of Soccer Saturday for over 29 years, he turned the results service into a cultural institution. His ability to juggle multiple live games, interact with pundits, and deliver scores with humour and precision made the programme unique, and Jeff himself a beloved television personality.
Each week, Jeff delivered live scores, updates from across the football leagues, and engaging interactions with a rotating panel of pundits, all with his signature humour and energy.
He would present for up to six hours at a time, juggling live reports from reporters at matches, unexpected updates and conversations with a panel of pundits, including players such as Chris Kamara and George Best.Â
At the end of the 22/23 season, Jeff left Sky Sports after 29 years at the broadcaster.
Beyond his extensive career in sports broadcasting, Jeff Stelling has showcased his versatility across various television genres. In 2009, he succeeded Des O’Connor as host of Channel 4’s popular quiz show Countdown.Â
In 2016, he expanded his presenting repertoire by hosting ITV’s daytime game show Alphabetical, a fast-paced quiz based on word association. The show proved popular enough to warrant a second series in 2017.Â
Jeff has also appeared in scripted television. He starred as himself in the football-themed comedy series Ted Lasso, The IT Crowd, and Dream Team, often portraying a version of himself that parodies his real-life broadcasting persona.Â
Additionally, he participated in the 2008 celebrity edition of The Weakest Link and, in the same year, took over from Des O’Connor as the main presenter.Â
Jeff has also appeared as himself in several programmes, including Ted Lasso (2020), The IT Crowd (2010), Dream Team (2003-2005) and Mike Bassett: Manager (2005).
In late 2023, Jeff began co-presenting the breakfast show on talkSPORT every Monday and Tuesday alongside Ally McCoist, bringing his signature warmth and humour to the station’s morning lineup.
Additionally, Jeff launched the podcast Football’s Greatest, where he delves into the stories of football legends, offering fans an intimate look into the lives and careers of the sport’s most iconic figures.
Jeff Stelling has authored several books, each reflecting his deep passion for football and his distinctive sense of humour.
