Jamie Andrew is an incredibly inspiring individual. He was the first quadruple amputee to have climbed the Matterhorn in Switzerland, climb Kilimanjaro in Africa, complete a marathon, and complete an Iron Man Triathlon.
In 1999, Jamie and a climbing partner were trapped for five nights on the storm-bound icy summit of a French mountain. Sadly, the rescue – which was one of the most dramatic in the history of the Alps – came too late for his climbing partner. Jamie, despite suffering frostbite and hypothermia, survived, but ended up having his hands and feet amputated.
Many people would think this was the end of all hope, but Jamie didn’t. Since losing his hands and feet he has learned how to walk again, taken up skiing, completed marathons and iron man triathlons, and has climbed many more mountains.
He has now been a motivational speaker for over 20 years and has spoken for clients such as Danone Saudi Telecom, Bupa, Compare the Market, and Disney.

After his amputations, Jamie Andrew had to learn how to do the everyday tasks we take for granted, such as walking. Amazingly, after just four months in the hospital, he was back home and had returned to work as a manager of a small company.
He didn’t let his injuries stop him, and he has since taking up swimming, skiing, running, paragliding, snowboarding, caving, sailing, and orienteering, but it was returning to mountaineering that was to present him his biggest challenge, but also his greatest goal.
And just one year later, he climbed Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, raising over £15,000 for charity in the process. He also returned to rock climbing and ice climbing, and has since climbed mountains in England, Wales, Scotland, France, and Switzerland.

In 2001, he returned to the French Alps with his rescuers and doctors to climb the Aiguille du Midi as the subject of a documentary for French television.
He has since run the London Marathon (2002) raising over £22,000 for charity, climbed Mont Blanc (but had to turn back due to bad weather), and climbed Kilimanjaro (2004) with three other disabled mountaineers, raising £5,000 for a Tanzanian leprosy centre situated by the mountain. In 2007 he sailed in the North Sea Yacht Race as part of an all-amputee crew, raising over £10,000 for charity; I the same year he completed his ‘Titanium Man Challenge’ where he completed the full distance of an iron man triathlon – 2.4 miles swim, 112 mile cycle, and a 26.2 mile run in just 24 hours, raising over £40,000.
He was also part of the documentary The Limbless Mountaineer which followed his attempt to climb the Matterhorn, the most challenging mountain ever attempted by someone with such a disability, in 2016.
In 2005, Jamie released his book Life and Limb: A True Story of Tragedy and Survival, which documented his injury, his mountaineering attempts, and living as a quadruple amputee.
