Before embarking on his career in journalism, Ian King built a strong foundation in finance. After graduating from the University of Manchester, he joined Midland Bank (later part of HSBC) as a business analyst, where he gained first-hand experience of the workings of the financial sector. He then moved to HSBC’s investment banking arm, working in financial analysis and corporate banking.
He started his journalism career at The Daily Telegraph, then held roles at The Guardian and Mail on Sunday, gaining experience reporting on markets, corporate affairs and the stock exchange. In 2000, Ian became Business Editor at The Sun, a post he held for many years, during which he won several awards including Business Journalist of the Year at the UK Press Awards, and the same title from the London Press Club. He then moved to The Times as a Business Editor and Columnist – a role he still holds.
In 2014, Ian made the transition to television journalism when he was appointed Business Presenter at Sky News. He launched Ian King Live, which later evolved into Business Live, broadcast every weekday, where he conducted tough interviews with business leaders, featured FTSE-100 CEOs, and regularly analysed the impact of major economic and corporate stories. He was the long-respected business presenter for Sky News for over a decade, hosting more than 2,000 live editions of the channel’s flagship programme.
