Satirist Ian Hislop is the editor of Private Eye, as well as being the team captain ‘on the TV show Have I Got News For You (1990-present); he remains the only person to have appeared in every single episode across 50 series.
HIGNFY has won numerous awards and has frequently made headlines, but it’s not the only one to have won accolades. Ian has won a BAFTA, Magazine of the Year, Editor of the Year, Channel 4 Political Award, Liberty Human Rights Award, and Trip Advisors Travellers Choice.
As well as his time on the popular television show, he has become a popular broadcaster and writer, and has presented documentaries on politics, art, history, and religion. His TV credits include Question Time (1987-2021), The One Show (2008-23), and University Challenge (2005).

One of Britain’s best-known satirists, Ian Hislop’s early career involved penning sketches for Spitting Image (1984-88), and Harry Enfield, before he started writing screenplays. His writing credits include the BBC sitcom My Dad’s the Prime Minister (2003-04), and the film The Wipers Times (2013). But it was whilst at Oxford University that his journalism career started, interviewing the likes of Richard Ingrams – who was then the editor of Private Eye – for the magazine Passing Wind. Ian took over as editor in 1986, and has since reputedly been called “the most sued man in English legal history”.

Ian is credited as the author of the recent Private Eye annuals (1997-present), as well as A Bunch of Amateurs (2017), I Object: Ian Hislop’s Search For Dissent (2018), and plays Trial By Laughter (2018), and Spike (2022). He also wrote the BBC Radio 4 series Gush and The News at Bedtime, and comedy anthology Murder Most Horrid (1991-98). He has also presented Radio 4 documentaries on topics such a scouting, tax rebellions, female hymn composers, and the patron saints of Britain and Ireland.
Whilst best known for his long-term appearances on Have I Got News For You, he has also appeared on Loose Talk (1983), Who Do You Think You Are (2004), The One Show (2008-23), Portrait Artist of the Year (2021), and Loose Women (2024).
