Gerald Ashley is a broadcaster, advisor, and writer on business risk, behavioural economics, and decision making, with over 35 years of experience in international finance and business, having worked in London and Hong Kong for Baring Brothers and Co, and in Switzerland at the Bank of International Settlements.
He is currently the Managing Director of St Mawgan & Co, a strategy and risk consultancy business he co-founded in 2003, and a Non-Executive Director at Fund Managers Equitile.
He has addressed audiences in over 25 countries, from senior business leaders and government ministers to start-up entrepreneurs. His main interests are in the human aspects of risk, uncertainty, and innovation, and how we make decisions.
Of particular interest will be his research into the effects of demographic shifts on politics, economics and the whole investment landscape. He looks at how shrinking fertility and an aging population is setting up the perfect risk storm over the next 10 years and further out. As well the inherent risks this new era, it will also bring forth new opportunities, where are the regions, economies and the industries to focus on.
He is a frequent commentator in the media and in the press and is an experienced chairman of conferences, seminars, and panel events. He has written three bestselling books on decision making, financial speculation, and the business world. He is a Visiting Fellow at Newcastle Business School and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Gerald Ashley has over 35 years of experience in international business and finance, having worked in England, Hong Kong, and Switzerland.

Gerald is a co-host of the Equitile Conversations podcast about global markets and geopolitics. He has made appearances on the Simplifying Complexity podcast, where he discussed the difference between risk and uncertainty, and how to manage them in the financial world, and on the Money podcast, where he talked about how politics can effect the financial market.
He has made regular media appearances on BBC World Service Radio, Sky News TV, Jazz FM, US and Canadian Radio, BBC TV, and Danish TV, on topical business, risk, and financial issues.
Gerald has published three bestselling books on the business and finance worlds, including:
– Two Speed World: The Impact of Explosive and Gradual Change – Its Effect On You and Everything Else (2010): we live in a world of change, which splits naturally into steady progress punctuated by sudden disruptions. Examining leading ideas and historical examples, this book gets to the heart of the dilemma, looking at how we can recognise the importance of the changes that we face, what pitfalls we need t avoid, and what tools are available to help us.
– Financial Speculation: Trading Financial Biases and Behaviour (2010): This book looks into the world of finance, and helps readers to understand the behaviour and biases of the people involved in that world.
– The Tangled World: Understanding Human Connections, Networks, and Complexity (2011): Gerald draws on multiple sources to uncover the answers to the big questions about group behaviour, connections, and the complex relationships that drive our world.
Gerald is now a highly sought-after speaker and advisor on change, risk, and decision making. He has a number of powerful insights and tools to help people understand the biases and seemingly irrational behaviour of the world around us.

Thank you so much for such a fantastic talk last night. We’ve had incredibly positive feedback from members who felt that the distinction between a mess, problem and puzzle has definitely changed their outlook on their businesses!
Lyndsey Duff, South African Chamber of Commerce – London
Gerald made a great contribution to our conference. A thoughtful yet concise and high-level introduction to risk management, with just the right level of humour and some excellent, simple take-aways.
