Francis Benali MBE is a former footballer, ultra endurance athlete, and charity fundraiser.
Seen by many as a Southampton FC legend, Francis played in nearly 400 games for his hometown club.
In recent years he has completed several ultra endurance challenges, raising over £1.4 million for Cancer Research UK.
Francis Benali MBE – otherwise known as Franny – played only for Southampton F.C between 1988 and 2004, with his final game coming in January 2004. He later played a handful of games for non-league side Eastleigh, retiring from active playing around 2007.
Since retiring, he has become a popular football pundit working with broadcasters such as the BBC and Sky Sports.

In August and September 2014, Francis completed a three week 1,000 mile challenge, running to all 20 Premier League grounds, raising over £100,000 for Cancer Research UK.
In 2016 he completed another challenge, running and cycling to all 44 Premier League and Championship stadiums in two weeks. He ran the equivalent of a marathon and cycled 75 miles each day, raising more than £350,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Then in 2019 he announced he would race seven Ironmans in seven days, as part of his aim to raise £1 million for Cancer Research UK. Despite being hospitalised, he completed five Ironmans, but still achieved his fundraising target.
As a result of his fundraising efforts, Francis was the first recipient of the Barclays Spirit of the Game Award, a Cancer Research UK Flame of Hope Award winner, and the JustGiving Celebrity Fundraiser of the Year. He was also recognised by Southampton City Council making him a Freeman of the City.
As a public speaker, he delivers inspirational talks to various audiences, including corporate, educational and sporting clients.
He is available for keynote talks, corporate events, fireside chats, Q&As, conferences, global summits, trade shows, gala dinners, team building events, cruise ship bookings, and university, college and school lectures.

Your presentation was absolutely fantastic. It was humble, relatable and very inspiring. Even though you presented to a real mix of people (different age groups, job roles, etc) everyone found it informative and was able to take a personal touch away with them. It really was the highlight of the day and we would have no hesitation in asking you to speak at future events again.

Franny spoke to a team of Operational Supervisor’s in a safety critical role, where he brilliantly drew parallels between professional sports teams and high-performing leadership teams. His speech was thought provoking, inspirational and motivational and the whole team were captivated by it. The very fact that Franny was able to deliver such a speech with passion, humour and humility is testament to his ability to motivate others. I would thoroughly recommend him to anybody looking for a motivational and inspiring presentation.

I approached Franny to be a guest on The Everyday Adventure Podcast after hearing his story from a mutual friend. Throughout our interactions, from our initial phone conversation right through to recording the episode, I was blown away by his humility, generosity and willingness to share the challenges he has faced, as well as his incredible acheivements. As a guest he was utterly inspirational and he formed a real connection with the audience, as shown by the amazing feedback I have received since. l would highly recommend Franny as a guest and speaker; you cannot fail to be inspired by his outlook and approach to life.

It was a real privilege to welcome Francis Benali to our Technology team day at Chelsea Football Club. As Director of Technology at Chelsea Football Club, I have followed Franny’s career both as a footballer and through his incredible charity work — I have long admired the impact he has made both on and off the pitch. Franny gave an inspiring and engaging talk, walking us through his life, career highlights, setbacks, and how he overcame them. He perfectly aligned his experiences with the challenges we are facing as a team, making his story incredibly relevant and powerful. I would highly recommend Franny — he is a natural speaker, and everyone left the session feeling motivated, energised, and connected to the values he shared.

Franny was guest speaker at our 10 year anniversary dinner. As a ‘local hero’, his story of how he made it as a professional footballer and then went on to achieve so much for charity by putting his body on the line is one that audiences of all ages and backgrounds can relate to. Franny demonstrates that if you focus on your goal and have real commitment, you can achieve whatever you set out to do. Our members gave me great feedback on how much they enjoyed Franny’s story.

There are many impassioned speakers, but to genuinely inspire 16 and 17 year olds you need a touch of magic. As soon as he stood in front of 400 former students and their parents, Franny began to weave his spell. Everybody, in a matter of 20 or so minutes, experienced the highs and lows of Franny’s endurance tests, laughing and crying in equal measure. You could have heard a pin drop as images of a near-broken Franny flashed up on the screen, whilst silently and palpably the audience willed him on, eventually sharing in his tears of relief and joy as he’s seen crossing the finish line at the end of his 2 weeks feat of running and cycling 1400 miles. A great story of the human spirit tested to breaking point. Inspiring, moving, funny – told with humility and impossible modesty.
