Hailing from Carmarthen, Wales, Emma Finucane’s passion for cycling ignited at the tender age of eight. Her journey began at a local velodrome situated on a military base in Wales, where a modest £1 membership fee granted her access to the world of track cycling. This early exposure laid the foundation for her burgeoning career.

In 2019, Emma was recognised for her outstanding performances at the Junior European and World Track Championships.  She was honoured with the Colin Thornton Junior Performance of the Year award at the Welsh Cycling Awards.

Emma made her senior team debut in 2022 at the Commonwealth Games, winning two bronze medals.

The following year she was the start of the British Cycling National Track Championships, winning four national titles in Sprint, Team Sprint, Keirin, and the 500m Time Trial. Later that year at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, she claimed her first major title, winning gold in the women’s Sprint, as well as taking home second place in the Team Sprint.

But it was really in 2024 where she burst onto the national scene. She took home two first place medals at the UCI Track World Championships in Sprint and Team Sprint, as well as first place in the Sprint at the UEC European Championships, and second place in the Team Sprint.

Emma made her Olympics debut in Paris, and what a debut it was. Alongside teammates Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant, she won gold in the Team Sprint, breaking the world record three times during the event. She also took home two bronze medals in the Sprint and Keirin.

2022: Secured her first national title in the team sprint at the British National Track Championships, complemented by a silver and two bronze medals in other events.

2022 Commonwealth Games: Represented Wales and earned bronze medals in both the individual sprint and team sprint events, showcasing her burgeoning international prowess.

2023 British National Track Championships: Dominated the championships by clinching four national titles in the 500m time trial, individual sprint, keirin, and team sprint, bringing her total national titles to five.

2023 UCI Track Cycling World Championships: Achieved a milestone by winning gold in the women’s individual sprint, becoming the first British woman in a decade to secure this title. Additionally, she set a new British record in the 200m sprint with a time of 10.234 seconds and contributed to a silver medal performance in the team sprint.

2024 Paris Olympics: Played a pivotal role in Great Britain’s historic gold medal victory in the women’s team sprint, where the trio set a new world record of 45.186 seconds. Finucane also added bronze medals in the individual sprint and keirin events, making her the first British woman since 1964 to win three medals in a single Olympic Games.
