Ellis Watson’s early career was firmly rooted in media and publishing. After working in advertising and marketing, he joined News International, where he became Marketing Director for The Sun and News of the World, reporting directly to Rupert Murdoch. His success in these high-profile roles soon led to new opportunities.
In 2000, he became Managing Director of Celador International. Ellis played a pivotal role in transforming Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? into a global sensation, licensing the format to more than 100 countries and developing a hugely profitable range of consumer products. His ability to scale entertainment formats internationally made him a leader capable of turning creative ventures into worldwide commercial successes.

Ellis then returned to Fleet Street as Managing Director at Mirror Group Newspapers, where he oversaw both national and regional titles during a period of considerable change in the industry. From there, he joined John Menzies, and subsequently sat on the board of FirstGroup, where he focused on the turnaround of transport operations such as the iconic Greyhound bus service in North America, improving service quality, brand image and employee engagement.
In 2005, Ellis pivoted into distribution and logistics company John Menzies before joining the board of FirstGroup. In this role, he turned around iconic transport brands like Greyhound across the Americas, tackling poor service, low morale, and negative public perception across an overstretched network.
In 2010, Ellis was appointed CEO of Syco Corporation, the joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony Music, overseeing its international expansion and commercial strategy. During his time there, he helped to scale some of the world’s most successful entertainment franchises, including The X Factor and Got Talent, which dominated television markets worldwide.
From 2011, Ellis took on senior leadership roles at DC Thomson, one of Scotland’s most established publishing and media groups. Initially responsible for the newspaper division, he became Chief Executive of DC Thomson Publishing and eventually Executive Chairman.
Over nearly a decade, he transformed the company from a traditional print-based organisation into a modern multimedia business, embracing digital, data and new platforms while safeguarding its heritage brands. Ellis stepped down in 2020, leaving a cultural and strategic renewal legacy.
