Eddie Izzard – who goes by Suzy in private but Eddie professionally – is one of the most celebrated comics of her generation. Since the early nineties, Eddie has also earned a stellar reputation as a film, television, and stage actor.

Her world-renowned stand-up shows include ‘Unrepeatable’, ‘Definite Article’, ‘Glorious’, and ‘Dress to Kill’, which earned her a New York Drama Desk Award and two Emmy Awards.

She now tours her shows in four languages – English, French, German, and Spanish – and is conversational in Russian, Italian, and Arabic.

She is a tireless supporter of charities and good causes, and has run dozens of marathons to raise money. She has raised over £4 million for Sport Relief, and during the 2021 lockdown, she completed an incredible 31 virtual marathons and 31 streamed gigs in 31 days to raise money for her Make Humanity Great Again campaign.

Eddie Izzard started her career in a double act whilst at University, first as a street performer before moving to stand-up. Her first stage appearances was at London’s Comedy Store in 1987, earning recognition for her talent in improvisation.

After a few years of performing, her reputation for unique, thoughtful performances grew. Building a cult following in the UK and US, her shows have become huge successes live, on TV, and on DVD.

She has performed her critically acclaimed one-woman shows ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘Hamlet’ around the UK, and in New York and Chicago.

In 2010, her show ‘Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story’ received an Emmy Award nomination. Her companion autobiography Believe Me (2017) entered the top ten in the Sunday Times bestseller list and the New York Times bestseller list.

Eddie is probably best known now for her acting performances across television, film, and stage. Highlights from her film career include Valkyrie, Ocean’s Twelve, Ocean’s Thirteen, Victoria And Abdul, Dr Jekyll, Five Children and It, Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Six Minutes to Midnight.

On television she has appeared in Power, Hannibal, Treasure Island, The Day of the Triffids, Castles in the Sky, and The Riches

Her West End debut came in 1994 in the world premier of David Mamet’s ‘The Cryptogram’. The success of that role led to a second starring role in ‘900 Oneonta’, and she has since starred across the West End and Broadway in Christopher Marlow’s ‘Edward II’, Monty Python’s ‘The American Film Institute’s Tribute to Monty Python’, and ‘Monty Python Live (Mostly)’, Julian Barry’s ‘Lenny’, Peter Nichols’ ‘A Day in the Death of Joe Egg’, and David Mamet’s ‘Race’.

Away from her performing roles, Eddie is an active campaigner and fundraiser. Notably she ran 43 marathons in 51 days with virtually no experience and only six weeks training for Sports Relief. She received a special BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2009 for this achievement.

In 2016, she attempted to run 27 marathons in 27 days through South Africa for Sport Relief, in recognition of the 27 years Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for. She completed the first marathon on 23rd February 2016 and completed the final one on 20th March 2016 at the state of Mandela in Pretoria. This challenge earned over £1.35 million for Sport Relief.

In 2020, Eddie announced she would run 31 marathons and perform 31 stand-up gigs in the 31 days of January 2021 to raise money for causes including Fareshare, Walking With the Wounded, Care International, United to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases, and Covenant House.

She is a prominent campaigner, and has spoken in support of the EU, the Labour Party, and voting reform, as well as humanism, equality and diversity, sustainability, and human rights.

Eddie identifies as genderfluid, and whilst she prefers to go by Suzy in private, she is happy to keep the name Eddie for professional situations. While she knew early on that she didn’t feel completely at ease as a boy, she didn’t come out until she was 29 with the help of a friend.
