Dr James Luke – AI Strategist | Technologist | Keynote Speaker
Dr James Luke is one of the UK’s most authentic voices on Artificial Intelligence and Innovation … a speaker who has actually built the systems others only talk about. With over 35 years’ experience delivering high-integrity AI across government, defence, national security and major industry, James blends deep technical authority with humour, clarity and storytelling that lights up the room. He doesn’t do hype. Every insight, every anecdote, comes from real projects that changed the way organisations think and perform.
James’s talks have inspired audiences from the MoD to the NHS, from international conferences to TEDx. He’s described by clients as “the rare technologist who makes you laugh, think and change your mind.” His sessions combine academic rigour with real-world pragmatism, helping executives cut through confusion and discover how AI and Innovation create measurable value in a secure, ethical and profitable manner.
As founder of Doability.ai, James now helps organisations bridge the gap between what’s possible and what’s practical. He delivers keynotes, panels and workshops that leave audiences informed, entertained and equipped to act.
A former Innovation Director at Roke Manor Research, leading 900 engineers in autonomy, cyber and intelligence; and Chief Technology Officer for IBM’s £400 million UK Public Sector, James has advised at the highest levels of government and industry. He was Chief Architect for IBM Watson Tools and the i2 Intelligence Platform, used globally by law enforcement and defence, and is named as an inventor on over 20 US patents in AI, cybersecurity, and natural-language processing.
He has given evidence to the House of Lords and the European Commission, appeared on BBC Breakfast, Sky News and in New Scientist. He is the author of Beyond Algorithms: Delivering AI for Business – a practical guide that distils decades of engineering experience into usable strategies for leaders.

James’s AI keynotes are immersive, story-driven explorations of what it truly takes to deliver dependable AI in the real world. Drawing on three decades of engineering leadership, he explains complex concepts with humour and precision — equally at home addressing an audience of PhDs or a boardroom of CEOs. Every talk is grounded in lived experience: AI supporting a live police investigation, analytics saving years of manual work, and autonomous systems transforming national security operations. James demystifies the technology, exposes the pitfalls, and shows how to build AI programmes that actually work. Audiences leave with practical insight, not buzzwords and a clear sense of how to turn AI from theory into measurable business impact.
James’s Innovation talks step beyond AI to explore how real breakthroughs happen, from the Wright Brothers and Barnes Wallis to the Space Programme and Formula 1. With engaging storytelling and audience interaction, he challenges conventional thinking about creativity and progress, showing that Innovation is not just about ideas, but disciplined experimentation, engineering excellence, and the courage to deliver under pressure. Drawing on lessons from history and his own career leading large technical teams, James helps organisations rethink what Innovation means; replacing slogans with substance and leaving audiences inspired to innovate with purpose.
