Doug Naylor
Doug Naylor is a comedy writer, director, television producer, and author, best known as the co-creator of the cult British sci-fi comedy series Red Dwarf.
He has written or co-written every episode across thirteen series and has directed over twenty episodes. He co-founded Grant Naylor Productions in 1991, and in 2017 he formed Three Feet Productions with his son Richard – the name is a play on words about Doug’s prosthetic leg.
Her has also been the head writer and script editor on the original run of the satirical puppet show Spitting Image, and has written a number of award-winning radio shows.

More About Doug Naylor
Doug Naylor met his future collaborator Rob Grant at school, before studying together at Liverpool University – dropping out after two years to pursue a writing career.
Their first big job was with BBC Radio, where they worked on programmes including Cliché and Son of Cliché, the sitcom Wrinkles and the topical show The News Huddlines.
They began working in television in 1982, with a job on Three of a Kind. They began work on Red Dwarf in 1984, but the BBC initially declined to commission the show, so the duo moved on to work on Spitting Image. Red Dwarf was finally commissioned in 1986 and Doug would go on to co-write every episode over its thirteen series.
He also co-created the Carlton TV series The 10 Percenters, for which one of his scripts won a British Comedy Award, and directed a one-off comedy for BBC One entitled Over to Bill starring Hugh Dennis, Neil Morrissey, Helen George, and Tracy Ann Oberman.
A 1994 episode of the programme won an International Emmy Award in the Popular Arts category, as well as a Best BBC Comedy Series accolade at the British Comedy Awards, and in 2013, Red Dwarf X won the Royal Television Society’s award for Best Special Effects.
