Donato Masi is a Professor of Supply Chain Management at the UK Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence (SCALE) Centre. SCALE is a research institute established in 2024 by Loughborough University in partnership with the MIT Center for Transportations and Logistics.
His work sits at the intersection of supply chain management and technology, with a strong emphasis on turning advanced research into practical solutions for organisations operating in complex, high-pressure environments.
Donato Masi originally trained as a mechanical engineer, gaining a PhD in Management Engineering and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in Italy.

Before joining Loughborough University, he held academic appointments at the University of Warwick and Aston University, where he developed a strong track record of industry-engaged research and executive-orientated education.
A core feature of his work is close, long-term collaboration with industry. He has led and contributed to multiple Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) and industry-funded projects, working side by side with companies to design and implement digital, data-driven, and AI- enabled approaches to operations and supply chain decision-making. These projects typically focus on real operational challenges, from planning and execution to automation, resilience, and sustainability, and aim to deliver tangible, measurable impact rather than purely conceptual innovation.
Alongside his work in research and industry, Donato teaches across undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, and doctoral programmes. His teaching is strongly practice-oriented and informed by live industrial projects. He also supervises PhD students in operations and supply chain management, particularly on topics that sit at the boundary between theory, technology, and real-world implementation.
