Derek Redmond first rose to prominence in 1985 when he broke the British 400m record. He shone even more the following year when he won gold as part of the 4x400m relay team for the European Championships. The team would go on to win a silver at the 1987 World Championships, before winning gold at the 1991 World Championships alongside Kriss Akabusi, John Regis, and Roger Black.
Having proved himself as a relay athlete, he wanted to do the same as an individual runner. He appeared at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and became part of one of the most inspirational scenes in Olympic history. At the 250m mark in the 400m semi-final, he tore his hamstring; determined to finish the race, he hobbled to the finish line with the help of his father as a 65,000-strong crowd cheered him one. The video of the event has been viewed online over 500 million times!
Whilst the injury might have signalled an end to his athletics career, it did not stop his sporting career, and he has since played basketball for England, professional rugby 7s, is a former national kickboxing champion, a semi-pro boxer, and a former motorcycle national endurance champion.
