Clarke Carlisle is a formidable mental health inspirational speaker and Chair Elect of mental health charity MIND
On 22 December 2014, Clarke Carlisle was hit by a lorry on the A64 near York, and subsequently airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary having suffered cuts, bruises, internal bleeding, and many broken bones.
It has became one of the widest publicised suicide attempts of recent years, hitting the headlines across the UK.
It didn’t end there, long running mental health issues caused his first marriage to fail and a second attempt to take his own life followed in September 2017, he was reported missing, having last been seen earlier that day in Manchester city centre, though thankfully found safe in Liverpool.
Often, along with wife Carrie, Clarke Carlisle discuss in a disarmingly open way, both Clarke’s own struggles with mental health and talk about how this affects us all and those around us providing audiences with inspiring and actionable outcomes.
Clarke Carlisle has been phenomenally successful at engaging with colleagues in all types or commercial and organisations over the past decade including many FTSE 100 companies.
Clarke Carlisle is a former award winning Premier League football star having made more than 500 appearances for nine different clubs.
A former Chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association chairman Clarke was a well-known figure in football he came to the attention of the press and public after a high-profile suicide attempt, his second attempt. But it wasn’t the last – he would go on to attempt suicide five times. It soon became clear, this was the culmination of a career and life blighted my mental health issues.

Alongside and following his football career he became involved with the media as a television presenter and author. His wife Carrie is a newspaper columnist, author and TV presenter.
Clarke and Carrie Carlisle make a great team, delivering powerful, emotional, educational and inspiring speeches by providing insight as to what it is like to live with a mental illness and what it is like to live with someone with a mental illness.
Clarke has recently been appointed Chair Elect of mental health charity MIND. Of the charity, he says, “We need open access to mental health services. We need to break up the system into crisis, recovery, wellness. Distinct parts that everybody understands. It’s a traffic light system, and if people know where they are then we can give a clearer understanding of the services that are needed at each point.”
In addition to keynote talks of varying lengths Clarke and Carrie Carlisle also provide mentoring and other mental health support services to individuals and organisations of various sizes.
