Alfie Boe OBE is one of the UK’s most acclaimed Opera and West End performers.
It was being discovered singing whilst working as a mechanic that jumpstarted Alife’s singing career; a career which has spanned more than two decades, conquering the worlds of musical theatre, opera, and popular music.
He is probably best known for his performance as Jean Valjean in the musical Les Misérables at the 25th Anniversary Concert in London. He has also performed in Finding Neverland on Broadway, and Baz Luhrmann’s 2002 revival of La Bohème – which won the cast a Tony Award.
He has sold over 10 million albums – as a solo artist, in production soundtracks, and alongside fellow singing sensation Michael Ball. His albums have gone platinum, have placed in the top 10 charts, and he’s seen three albums reach number one.

Alfie Boe was named after the Italian name of Pope John XXIII, and so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to know that his earliest musical memories were of listening to Italian Opera, such as Puccini’s La Bohème.
AlfieBoe’s first public performance came aged 14, when he performed at Fleetwood’s Marine Hall, but it wasn’t a career he immediately entered. Instead, when he was 17 he became an apprentice mechanic in Blackpool. Whilst working, he would entertain his colleagues by singing opera arias whilst working on the cars, and it was here he would be discovered. A customer was so impressed with Alfie’s singing ability, he encouraged him to audition for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company – an audition he was successful at.
He moved to London and started studying at the Royal College of Music, the National Opera Studio, and the Royal Opera House, on their Young Artists Programme.

His stage career exploded in 2002 when he was cast in a lead role by Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann for his Broadway revival of La Bohème. Along with the rest of the ensemble, this performance would win Alfie a Tony Award. His other stage credits include Don Pasquale (1999), and Kismet (2007).
But it was in 2010 where he exploded onto the international stage, in his performance of Jean Valjean in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Misérables. The concert encore performance of ‘Bring Him Home’ saw Boe perform with previous Valjeans, Colm Wilkinson, John Owen-Jones, and Simon Bowman; the performance was released as its own charity single. He would go on to reprise his role in 2011, 2015, 2016, and from 2019. As of October 2024, he was still playing Valjean in the national touring show.
In 2016 he played the leading role of J.M Barrie in the Broadway production of Finding Neverland, before taking on the romantic lead of Billy Bigelow in Carousel in 2017 alongside Katherine Jenkins.
Since his stage career went international, Alfie has become a very popular singer on his own and with collaborators.
