Initiated by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and taking place across October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about cybersecurity and cybercrime prevention.

As stated by Twenty Four IT Services, 2024 saw:

• 8.58 million cyber attacks on UK businesses
• 30% of charities reported at least on cyber breach or attack
• 72% of all businesses surveyed ranked cybersecurity as a high priority
• 67% of medium businesses saw a high prevalence of cyber attacks
• 85% of businesses say phishing attacks remain the most disruptive
• £5,900 was the average calculated loss per business following a cyber attack

The aim of Cybersecurity Awareness Month is to promote the safe use of all technology, and education on technological advances. Whether in a personal or professional situation, cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility, and being educated about online safety can improve productivity, happiness, and mental wellbeing.

Glenn Wilkinson

Glenn Wilkinson is what is known as a ‘consulting’ hacker, a form of ethical hacker who helps identify cyber security vulnerabilities in a client’s system by legally trying to hack into it. They then provide expert advice on security measures they require to protect against cyber threats. When he’s not being a hacker, he builds products to help organisations defend themselves against cyber criminals, working with startups to multinational conglomerates and even governments. Joe Tidy

Joe Tidy is the BBC’s first dedicated cybersecurity reporter, investigating cybercrime, hacking, data security, privacy, online safety, and pretty much everything ‘internet’. He has built a reputation over the years for investigating the darker sides of the net and how technology directly affects the way people live. He is also known for tracking down and speaking face-to-face with hackers and criminals who have been responsible for some of the biggest cybersecurity crimes in recent years. Robert Hannigan CMG

Robert Hannington is a leading authority on cybersecurity, cyber conflict, and technology in national security. He has worked as the Chairman of BlueVoyant, a global cybersecurity services firm; Senior Advisor to McKinsey and Co; and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He joined GCHQ in 2014 as their Director, setting up the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, launching the active cyber defense program for the UK, and was responsible for the UK’s national offensive cyber program.
