GBS Nicholas Owen

Nicholas Owen started his journalistic career in newspapers before switching to TV in 1981 with BBC North, moving in 1984 to Ch4 News Business and Economics Correspondent. During the first Gulf War, he also presented the highly acclaimed Midnight Special Programmes, then went on to be ITV's Royal Correspondent up until 2000.

During that time he reported on the death of Princess Diana and subsequently wrote a book on her life entitled Diana – The People's Princess. 

He has also written 3 other books on his love of railways and his autobiography published in 2012.

In 2007 he returned to the BBC on the BBC News Channel, as well as being the main relief presenter for the BBC Weekend News on BBC One.

He also has a radio programme on Classic FM and contributes to a number of TV and radio programmes.

Away from the media spotlight, since the 1980s he has been a supporter of the charities Cancer Research and ActionAid engaging in various fundraising events.

He is Ambassador of The Children's Trust, for children with brain injury. Patron of Dyscover Ltd a Surrey-based charity for people following stroke or brain injury.

Corporate work:

Nicholas undertakes a wide range of corporate work, which includes hosting major industry and medical conferences, seminars and award ceremonies; chairing question time sessions, debates and media briefings, as well as giving after dinner - and lunchtime - speeches.

  • Hosting the launch of the new one pound coin for the Royal Mint with the Queen's new portrait
  • Chairing the National Rail Conference for many years featuring panel discussions and audience participation with figures from the industry, the Government, and the Secretary of State for Transport
  • Host and present Staff Awards for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and St George's Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Hosting the Royal Television Society's North of England Awards (the biggest outside London) for many years
  • Chairing question and answer sessions on the future of oncology medicine for Pfizer Ltd
  • Chairing an international environmental conference at the Natural History Museum
  • Chairing question and answer sessions at successive Police Federation conferences
  • Chairing a BT workshop session involving other leading FTSE 100 firms
  • Hosting a major international television conference at the Palais de Congress in Paris, attended by TV executives worldwide, both in the audience and via video links
  • Chairing business sessions for Motorola Inc aboard a five-day cruise for CEOs worldwide
  • Facilitating and presenting international medical seminars including the European Society of Cardiologists and the European Haematology Association.
