Sally Gunnell OBE

GBS Sally Gunnell

Sally started out on the athletics circuit with Essex Ladies’ Club, initially as a long jumper and Pentathlete, before switching to the 400m hurdles, where she had her most famous successes. Sally quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with in British athletics. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, she achieved the one missing piece from her already impressive trophy cabinet – an Olympic Gold Medal!

As an energetic mother of three, Sally is always keen to draw on her knowledge and experience to help inspire and encourage families, to get active and healthy. Sally, has previously been a lead ambassador for UK Athletics’ partner, McCain, and she worked with them to encourage kids to get involved in athletics, so they can lead active, healthy lifestyles and become the champions of tomorrow. Sally was also previously an ambassador for Aviva, whose Healthcare team she worked closely with. Sally also partnered with Royal Caribbean, to launch their running initiative in partnership with Sports England, which worked to great effect. For the past 3 years, Sally has been chosen to front The Daily Telegraph’s Get Fit in 28 days with Mark Foster and Jonathan Edwards; A fitness guide for readers, in line with Sally’s desire to get more people more active, more of the time.

Following her retirement in 1997, Sally moved from the track to the television studio and, after a spell with BBC Sport commentating on their athletics coverage, in 2004 she teamed up with Colin Jackson as a mentor on the BBC1 sporting talent search show Born to Win, fronted by Dermot O’Leary. She returned to our screens in 2006, in the BBC’s successful Marathon show, Run For Glory. In the BBC1 show, Only Fools on Horses in association with Sports Relief she learnt the art of show jumping, as well as a stint reporting on BBC1’s The One Show, and appearing on ITV’s The Feel Good Factor, as well as most recently on ITV’s The Biggest Loser.

London 2012 marked the 20th anniversary of Sally’s historic Gold medal winning run in Barcelona. Having played a key role in putting British athletics on the map during her competition days, Sally was chosen to be an Olympic panellist as part of Sky Sports News broadcast coverage, where she offered expert analysis on all things Track & Field, not just her favoured 400-metre hurdles!

Sally’s unwavering motivation, dedication, and self-belief that ensured her on-track success now inspire audiences everywhere. Approachable and down-to-earth, she not only tells her own incredible story, but she works with businesses to help them get the very best out of their staff and shows that with the right mindset, it is possible to achieve anything. Her expertise within this field ensured she was kept busy throughout the London 2012 Games, where she provided Olympic moments for guests to treasure, from question and answer sessions to inspirational speeches, as part of sponsors’ hospitality packages and one-off personal appearances.
