Black History Month

Find a Black History Month Inspirational Speaker

Black History Month (BHM) first became prominent in the UK in the 1980s, with the first organised events taking place in London in 1987.
The movement was first proposed by Black scholars in the US, who sought ways to challenge racism and celebrate black culture and the lives of black people who have done remarkable things worldwide. While the US celebrates Black History Month in February, Black History Month is celebrated in October in the UK.
Why Celebrate Black History Month?
Despite this revolutionary movement and the rise of equality and diversity awareness, racism is still present in our everyday lives. This was no more evident than in 2020 when we witnessed the world come together in response to the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in the United States. The following solidarity demonstrations sparked a resurgence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement – a worldwide movement for equality and justice against racial discrimination first launched in 2013. As a result of Floyd and Taylor’s deaths, Black History Month (BHM) 2021 was possibly one of the most significant since the event began and demonstrated the solidarity and support for BAME communities, and yet in the months that followed, England’s players at Euro 2020 also became victims of racial abuse online, demonstrating that there is still a long way to go for racial equality.
