Catherine Capon is a British Naturalist and Environmental Activist who is passionate about Responsible Ecotourism.
She's currently running a project to encourage holidaymakers to visit wildlife hotspots during their vacations; rather than fighting for a sunbed at a 5-star, all-inclusive resort.
Having always been bewitched by wildlife, Catherine studied ecology and zoology at Imperial College London being fascinated by the theories but yearned to see these exotic creatures in their environment. Her first wildlife expedition was to study bats in Honduras.
Shes slept in a hammock and waved goodbye to all the ‘necessities’ that she'd become accustomed to living in London, learning to live a very simple life in that cloud forest. It was here that she experienced her first moment of pure awe – sitting on a smooth rock in the centre of a clear stream with the midnight forest singing around her. Having fireflies and bats dancing around her head combined with sheer happiness moved her to tears. That moment changed Catherine's life forever and became fiercely protective of that forest, becoming an eco-adventurer.
Life since university, she has seen her working in wildlife filmmaking and sustainability communication. Throughout this journey, always keeping the sense of purpose that she experienced in Central America. At every opportunity, travelling to a new corner of the planet to see the wildlife and how the people interact with the environment around them.
She's been lucky enough to visit places so beautiful that no photograph can truly capture them, and along the way, attempting to encourage her family and friends to join in.
It was these travels, through work and pleasure, that inspired Catherine's mission to write about and photograph the top wildlife hotspots on the planet.
She hopes that by doing this, other awe-seekers and eco-adventurers will awaken and unite to live more consciously with our planet.
The hard earned cash that you spend on your wildlife holiday makes those animals worth more alive than dead. At its best, ecotourism provides employment for local people and puts a real value on areas of outstanding natural beauty.
