Alex Staniforth

Alex Staniforth young Everest climbing motivational speaker at Great British Speakers 2018

Record-breaking young endurance adventurer, author & fundraiser, empowering others to put mind over mountains.

You probably haven’t heard a speaker quite like this... Journeying to Mount Everest, Alex had to overcome challenges that nearly took his life, facing two of the biggest disasters in Everest history.

At just 17, Alex climbed Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. He singlehandedly fundraised over £35,000 in corporate sponsorship to fund his Everest expedition, however, the expedition was cancelled at base camp following a disastrous avalanche that killed sixteen people. The following year he then survived an avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall triggered by the Nepal earthquake, which took the lives of three team-mates and trapped him on the mountain for two days.

Recognising that adversity is the greatest teacher, in 2016 he reached 7,125m on Cho Oyu, the worlds’ sixth highest peak, and co-ordinated the first ever “Walk4Nepal” event to support the Nepal earthquake victims, and released his award-winning book ‘ICEFALL’.

Not only is Alex an inspirational adventurer, but also an inspirational advocate for those suffering with mental health and physical disabilities; having suffered from epilepsy, panic attacks, low confidence, bullying, depression, an eating disorder –and most profoundly –a stammer, Alex found confidence in the outdoors, which encouraged him to achieve his full potential. And Mount Everest became the end goal.

In 2017 Alex completed Climb The UK, a 5,000-mile human-powered journey by bike, foot and kayak, climbing the highest point of all 100 UK counties in 72 days, whilst raising awareness for mental health and breaking the previous record by 20 days.

Having raised over £85,000 for charity, he proudly serves as an ambassador for YHA England & Wales, Westgrove Group, PHASE Worldwide and Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports, and as a non-executive director for YP Potential C.I.C.

What the clients say:

‘’The universal feedback from all delegates was that the session was inspirational, stunning, awesome and engaging delivered by a stand-out speaker. We cannot underestimate the messages delivered or the embodiment of these in determination to continue in the face of setbacks. You have shown, many times, that your actions are equal to your words, a true role model for young people everywhere”

Peter Batty, SASCAL Conference

“Alex is an excellent speaker with a story that can motivate and inspire any room. We gave him a brief of closing one of our most high profile events , whilst reinforcing our key messages in his speech. I am pleased to say he more than delivered on our expectations’’

Steve Swallow, Education Project Officer, The FA

“I asked Alex to come and share his “journey” with my team of senior managers and executives to give a good example of how people overcome numerous obstacles and still come out as winners. His preparation for the presentation was meticulous, and customised to my need, message and audience. His presentation was delivered perfectly –the timing was good, the message was brilliant and the whole team were captivated. The message of overcoming obstacles to come out on top was simply thrilling. The teams feedback was of the highest praise. I have no hesitation in recommending Alex as a speaker”

Dan Hallett, Senior Vice President, Health & Hygiene, Reckitt Benckiser

“I was part of the group that was transfixed by your story and please take my silence in the immediate aftermath of your presentation as a genuine moment of reflection on what we humans can achieve, when facing adversity in the most challenging of circumstances. Whether it is up a mountain or in a playground!”

Smurfit Kappa Open Leadership Programme

“This was a very successful presentation, it started strongly, captivated everyone’s attention and continued to a very high point at its conclusion. You used humour extremely well to put your audience at ease and carry them along with you. You pitched your presentation just right –very professional and proficient but with an endearing style. Audiences do not give a standing ovation lightly, especially the Chester Business Club. You should take great stock from this, as I am told that that not even Sir RanulphFiennes received such an accolade!!’’

Brigadier John Thomson, OBE QVRM TD MSc DL rcds

“You appeared confident and natural but equally with enough vulnerability/honesty to really draw people towards you. So many motivational speakers/professional story tellers are easily double your age. Demanding presence and authority just by nature of the sheer life experience they've racked up. As with all you do, you seem to bat that potential disadvantage to the side with relative ease. Your self-belief is not only truly deserved it's in my mind your absolute charm.”

Hannah Marsland, YHA England & Wales

"This young man has a special charisma, he tells his incredible story in an unassuming and simple way, that captures the imagination and inspires action. My management team and I were staggered by his drive and determination to succeed, and his achievements at the ripe old age of 20 are mind blowing. I wish him every success in his future and I will certainly invite him to speak again as his adventure in life unfolds."

Sophie Beardsall, Acting MD, Melton Foods
